Green Iron Workshop in sunny Adelaide

Australia! What will it take to:
✅ get a major, export-focused green iron project to financial close, pronto?
✅ turbocharge green iron trade across APAC?
✅ maximise the massive economic, energy, environmental, social and geo-strategic rewards associated with the green iron shift - both for Australia and our region as a whole?

To address these questions and identify urgent policy priorities, it was a privilege to join with such inspiring and motivated leaders from government, industry, finance, and the third sector at the third and final Green Iron Workshop in sunny Adelaide, hosted by #FirstMoversCoalition and Greenhouse.

Some personal highlights:

🔥 Having a fireside chat with the ever-insightful Nicole Wyche of WWF-Australia and inimitable Frank Jotzo to discuss how we define ‘green’ iron and why 'real green' matters - economically, environmentally, socially and geo-strategically.

📗 Moderating a panel of super creative energy policy thinkers and doers: thank you for your wonderful insights Rachel Howard of Mission Possible Partnership, Kyle Clark-Sutton of RMI, Tim Buckley of Climate Energy Finance and Oliver Yates, finance policy problem-solver extraordinare. What I learned: in the next 24 months we urgently need public and private demand creation, work towards an Asian CBAM, and dedicated diplomatic efforts to ensure the benefits of the green iron transition are understood and shared across APAC.

⚡ Being constantly inspired by my wonderful UNSW colleagues including Veena Sahajwalla AO and UNSW alumni including Steve Nethery, driving change every day through their industry leadership.

🇦🇺 Hearing the passion of industry visionaries like James Rhee, Attilio Pigneri, Stephen Archer, and Daniel Kim - who are helping lead the charge towards a prosperous green future for Australia.

✅ With Oliver Yates, making the urgent case an Australian Clean Commodities Trading Initiative (CCTI) to solve arguably the biggest barrier to green iron projects in Australia: lack of bankable demand. We need policy solutions that are efficient, effective and politically durable. We need hashtag#GreenEnergyStatecraft. https://lnkd.in/gEmPK6Ux

👷‍♀️ The crucial reminders across the program that the rapid energy transition we're pursuing must also be equitable for humans and sustainable for the planet. Thank you ClimateWorks Foundation, Joe Karten, Manik Mahajan

A huge shout out to the unstoppable greenhouse team Elsie O'Gorman Ed Schmidt Harry Guinness Charlotte Connell for making these three Green Iron Summits happen, as well as the awesome #FirstMoversCoalition team including Jelena R. Aleksić, Ph.D., Noam Boussidan and Julia Franchi Scarselli for their advocacy, organisation, and support for Australia's big green ambitions.

Let's get moving, Australia!
